PURPOSE STATEMENT
Stepping Stones for Veterans,
Inc. is a not-for-profit
organization located at 332 West
11th
Street, Anderson, Indiana
46016-1330. The program’s
purpose is to provide
transitional housing to
homeless, and/or chemically
dependent Veterans, some of
which may have a coinciding
mental illness. In support of
this program, Stepping Stones
strives to assist this
population in returning to, or
creating happy, productive,
substance-free lives by
providing alcohol and drug
education opportunities;
AA/NA/GA/CA recovery program
meetings; personal growth
experience; individual, group
and family therapy as well as
constructive recreational
activities.
In addition Stepping Stones for
Veterans, Inc. maintains a drug
and alcohol free community
proactively testing daily with
randomly administered drug and
alcohol screening.
“The Serenity
Prayer”
God grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot
change; courage to change the
things I
can; and the wisdom to know the
difference.
PROGRAM GOALS
1. To
help homeless and/or dually
diagnosed Veterans, some of
which may have PTSD [Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder] or
serious mental illness,
establish happy, productive
lives.
2. To
help this population understand
and modify patterns of behavior
improving relationship to
themselves and changing
self-conception for others.
3. To
help develop a sense of positive
self-images and to foster
dependence upon personal
strengths, rather than alcohol
and street drugs.
4. To
punctuate the seriousness of
alcohol and/or drug dependence
and to aid in solving or
avoiding problems leading to the
use of such substances.
5. In
providing transitional
facilities for chemically
dependent adults with
increasingly positive
environments motivate clients
toward self-sufficiency.
With the help of a dedicated
team of professionals, these
vets are given an opportunity to
turn their lives around.
But the change has to start with
the veterans themselves.
Stepping Stones just instills
the belief that they can do
better. Our Director and
Founder says this: “You have to
be willing to change, and change
is an on-going process.” The
residents who make that
commitment have taken the first
step toward complete
self-sufficiency and
contributing once more to
society. Thanks to Stepping
Stones, other veterans have
learned to accept situations
that have gone wrong in their
lives and are willing to take
the steps toward change, “This
was something I had to do,”
reflects veteran, “not something
I wanted to do. Life happens,
and the way you deal with it is
what makes the difference.”
